# Minting and ownership

Begin on the artwork's project page. Viewing is available without connecting a wallet; minting or transferring ownership requires an on-chain transaction.

## Before a mint

Read the description, artist credit and current mint information. Some projects have eligibility conditions or a particular mint route. Follow that project's instructions rather than assuming every project is minted in the same way.

For a standard public mint, the deployed art contract checks active and paused states, available supply and configured price. Artists and team members have different permissions. [Project management](/docs/project-admin) explains those rules; [current and proposed features](/docs/future) identifies prospective extensions.

Confirm the wallet's network and contract. The [contracts reference](/docs/contracts) links to the deployed art and code contracts. Mint price and transaction fee are separate amounts; use the wallet's current transaction details when reviewing a mint.

## After a mint

Wait for the transaction result and inspect its receipt. A slow page or missing thumbnail is not proof that minting failed. Check the transaction before submitting another mint.

Record Ethereum mainnet, the art contract address, global token ID, project ID, edition number, mint transaction hash and edition URL. Keep the artist's credit and project description as documented at acquisition.

The viewer uses `/#/<projectId>/<editionId>`. Marketplace token URLs and the contract's `ownerOf` call use the global token ID. Preserve both identifiers so another person can find the same work.

## Ownership and transfers

Read `ownerOf(globalTokenId)` on the art contract to verify the current owner. Transfer events provide movement history; a cached page or downloaded viewer can show an earlier owner.

A transfer does not create a new mint transaction. The recipient receives the existing edition with its original identity. Source access, the code-page NFT and the artist's stated license remain separate parts of the record. Collecting an edition does not grant project administration controls.

After receiving an edition, check the confirmed transaction and current owner, then reopen the work in the [viewer](/docs/viewing). Keep an [archive copy](/docs/preservation) of the materials needed to recreate it.
